Health authorities confirm a newborn infant has contracted and tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) claimed a male infant had tested positive for the virus, and was among the cases reported on Friday, 15th May.

The authority further commented the infant made contact with another infected patient, and initial tests were done on the child itself.

Dr. Nazla Rafiq, included in the Covid-19 task force commented the child's mother is currently being tested for the presence of the virus.

The task force official had however, not disclosed the details of the case origin - and currently uncertain if the case was discovered from Greater Male' Region or elsewhere.

In another news, a newborn was tested at Tree-Top Hospital. However, the test results of the newborn have not been presented to media yet.

Meanwhile authorities confirmed discovery of 47 new cases on Saturday with the total number of positive cases reported from Maldives increasing to 1078.
