Health Protection Agency HPA extends the lockdown of Male’ Area for an additional two weeks as authorities gear up for a surge of Covid-19 cases in the Maldives.
In a notice sanctioned by the Director-General of Public Health Maimoona Abubakoor, HPA said the current lockdown in the greater Male area of Male’, Villimale and Hulhumale would remain in place until the 28th of May
HPA initially announced a 24hr lockdown on the country’s capital on the 15th of April after the discovery of its first Covid-19 case from Male’ City. After that, on the 17th of April HPA extended the lockdown for a further 14 days and renewed the lockdown yet again on the 28th of April.
This is the third time the lockdown has been extended in the Male’ area.
HPA had said the lockdown order dictates complete restriction of movement and stopping public transport services in Greater Male’ Region until the 28th of this month.
Maldives Police Services have been issuing delivery permits for businesses to continue providing essential items to the citizens of Male’ Area while also issuing a grocery permit to one member from each household to allow them to restock provisions every three days.
A total of 955 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives with four deaths also recorded in the country.
