National Emergency Operations Center Mohamed Mabrook Azeez squashes rumors stating that the government is looking to implement stricter lockdown measures amid the current surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

Speaking to the media, Mabrook clarified that the Viber messages being circulated warning of stricter lockdown measures in the Male’ Area were false.

Mabrook said these messages stated that the current lockdown measures in the Male’ Area would be tightened with deliveries of goods discontinued, stores closed, and all ordered to stay indoors. He said that these messages were fabricated and that they had no basis.

Male’ Area had been under lockdown since the 15th of last month after the discovery of the first community case of Covid-19 in Male’. Yesterday, Addu City was placed under lockdown after its first positive case of Covid-19 was discovered.

Police have been issuing permits for those who need to go outside for essential purposes while 1 person from each household is allowed to go grocery shopping every three days. Also, businesses across the Male’ Area are delivering their goods to households and other locations in the capital city.
