Health Protection Agency extends Male’ Area Lockdown for an additional two weeks following the escalation of the Covid-19 crisis in the country.
In a notice sanctioned by the Director General of Public Health Maimoona Abubakoor, Health Protection Agency HPA said as the current lockdown currently in place in the greater Male area of Male’, Villimale and Hulhumale would expire tomorrow afternoon, the lockdown has now been extended to further fourteen days.
With this, the lockdown would be implemented until the 14th of May.
HPA initially announced a 24hr lockdown on the country’s capital on the 15th of May after the discovery of its first Covid-19 case from Male’ City. After that, on the 17th of April HPA extended the lockdown for a further 14 days with a surge in positive cases from the capital city.
HPA had said the lockdown order dictates complete restriction of movement and stopping public transport services in Greater Male’ Region for the next 14 days.
HPA said during this time driving vehicles and entering public spaces are prohibited in Male’ Vilimale’ and Hulhumale.
It said that Public transportation in Male’, Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’ is stopped.
HPA added that travel from Male’, Vilimale’, Hulhumale, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu is banned.
A total of 256 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives. Including more than 150 from Male’ area alone.
