A 6ft crocodile has been caught in Gaafu Alifu Atoll kondey.

Kondey Council said several islanders caught the reptile sometime last night.

Council President Ahmed Abdul Hakeem said the islanders who caught the crocodile were out fishing and reptile was kept under the council’s authority initially.

Hakeem said that the croc was subdued after it was caught and was caught from the rocky beach (futaru farai) of the island. He also said there was talk of two crocodile sightings but only one was caught.

It has been confirmed that the crocodile has now been handed over to Maldives Police Services.

Crocodile sightings are not uncommon in Maldives with these reptiles sometimes swept away by sea current from neighboring countries.
