The Health Protection Agency (HPA) of Maldives on Sunday dawn tweeted an alarming number of new positive cases of the COVID-19 virus.

HPA confirmed a total of 29 Bangladeshi nationals, 6 Maldivians and 1 Indian have tested positive for the viral disease.

The health authorities further claim most of the positive cases were discovered from residencies and tenements which were "vulnerable" as per HPA. The authority further attested all positive cases will be shifted to an isolation facility for treatment.

This marks the highest number of positive cases confirmed within a 24-hour window since the first case reported in Maldives.

According to the latest numbers, the total number of confirmed cases reported from Maldives have reached to 177; which is inclusive of the 17 recoveries and the 2 foreign nationals who tested positive after leaving the island nation.

Foreign nationals who have tested positive for the virus, in Maldives, have reached to 101 out of which 72 individuals are believed to have contracted the disease through a community spread.

Since the community spread, the total number of cases reported from Maldivian locals have reached to 73.

HPA confirm the highest demographic of positive cases were youth while a few cases of elderly citizens and children have been discovered in Maldives.

Meanwhile, the authority further attested a total of 241 venues or premises were under monitoring since the community spread.
