Assistant Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen says a total of 209 individuals have been fined for violating the lockdown currently in place in Male’ Area after the community spread of Covid-19 was confirmed last week.

Speaking to reporters, Naveen said a total of 209 individuals have been fined after failing to follow lockdown regulations and that 30 people were fined yesterday alone.

Police had said individuals found outdoors with a valid pass during the current lockdown would be fined by MRF 1000.

Naveen also said 4 others have been apprehended by police for repeated offenses and that they would be investigated further.

He said 71 Bangladeshi nationals found living on the streets have been relocated to shelter facilities arranged for them. He added that 44 homeless persons were also found on the streets during the lockdown and that police was now providing food, shelter and other basic needs to these people.

Male’ Area including Male’, Villimale and Hulhumale’ was placed under lockdown last Wednesday after a Maldivian living in Male’ with no recent travel history was tested positive for Covid-19.

Since then the number of positive cases have soared in the congested Male’ with 66 infected within a week.
