Country’s Covid-19 Technical Advisory Group Leader Dr. Ali Latheef urges individuals to wear protective masks if going outside of their homes.

Speaking to reporters via a online conference, Dr. Ali Latheef said although members of public were instructed not to wear protective masks, in light of the current escalation of Covid-19 in the country, all must wear masks before stepping outside their homes for essential needs.

Dr. Ali Latheef said with the virus now spreading in Male’ a spike in positive cases is expected. But he said with the current lockdown of Male’ Area, number of positive cases is expected to drop.

Dr. Ali Latheef warned that if the general public did not heed the instructions given by the authorities, the risk of raise in positive cases is higher. Dr. Ali Latheef said although HPA projections have shown a spike in cases with fatalities, current positive cases were all reacting well to the treatment.

TAG Team member Dr. Nazla Musthafa said ventilation is key to quelling further spread of the highly contagious virus. She instructed the public to open windows in their homes and said that this would reduce the virus particles.

Dr. Nazla highlighted that the study of the current positive cases showed that people living in close quarters have been more susceptible to the contraction of the virus.

49 of the 69 cases so far confirmed in Maldives are from the Capital Male’. HPA had confirmed that 14 foreigners have contracted the virus having lived in congested housing quarters.
