Official spokesperson for Covid-19 updates in Maldives, Mohamed Mabrouk Azeez says the country’s current medical care resources leave two doctors and 7 nurses to treat every 1000 individuals from the population.

Addressing the media via a web conference, Mabrouk said now there are 905 licensed doctors and 2970 practicing nurses in the country.

Mabrouk said the healthcare workforce could manage the current situation of Covid-19 in the country. But he said that if the number of positive continues to escalate healthcare workforce would face difficulties performing their duties.

Mabrouk said government is working to shore up the shortage of medical workers by bringing back the Maldivian medical students studying abroad and that these students would be given the appropriate training required for the treatment of the global pandemic.

The Covid-19 crisis in the country has deteriorated these past four days after the discovery of the first case confirmed from Male’ Area last Wednesday. Since that 21 individuals have tested positive for Covid-19 in Male’ with 18 new cases reported in the last 24hrs.
