Speaker of the Parliament and Former president Mohamed Nasheed forecasts that 2000 people from Maldives would contract the Covid-19 virus.

He made the comments while speaking to Parliamentary Group leaders on the efforts to deter the mass spread of the virus.

Nasheed said although several measures have been taken to combat against the global pandemic, around 2000 people in Maldives will be infected.

Nasheed cited the projections made by epidemiologists from Health Protection Agency HPA in his comments.

He said that these scientific findings and that 5 percent to 10 percent people from Maldives would require critical treatment.

The Speaker also said that with current social distancing measures that has been implemented, Maldivians might have to live under these conditions for about 210 days.

He posed the question whether or not Parliament sessions should be carried out within the norms of social distancing or whether the sessions should remain virtual.

The virtual sessions scheduled for this week were cancelled with Parliamentarians given room for their committee duties.

Twenty people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Maldives including 5 Maldivians. Fourteen of these individuals have since recovered from the illness.
