Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi says 102 cases of domestic violence and 391 cases of child abuse and misconduct were reported in the first three months of this year.

Addressing the press at Dharubaaruge, Minister clarified that 37 cases of domestic violence were reported in January while 39 cases were reported in February. She added that 26 such cases were reported last month.

Minister said 121 cases of child abuse and misconduct were reported in January while 169 such cases were reported in February. She added that in March, 101 cases of child abuse and misconduct were reported to the Ministry.

The Minister noted that in March there was a decline in the number of reported cases for both domestic violence and child abuse and misconduct and said the decline left her hopeful.

But she explained that research showed that when victims of abuse are forced to stay longer with their abusers, the incidents of report decline.

With authorities taking preventive measures to deter a massive outbreak of Covid-19, families have been forced to stay inside their homes for many hours.
