Health Protection Agency HPA says a sample taken from a Maldivian who returned from the UK has tested positive for Covid-19.
In a tweet HPA said, samples were taken after the individual showed symptoms of the virus and the person is under quarantine at the Royal Island Quarantine facility.
With this, three Maldivians have now tested positive for the virus that has caused a global pandemic.
All three Maldivians returned to the country from the UK where the virus is spreading rapidly.
Official spokesperson for Covid-19 related updates in Maldives Mr. Mabrouk Azeez said yesterday that 77 people had come in contact with the two Maldivians who had tested positive for the virus earlier.
Addressing the media last night, Mr. Mabrouk said to avoid confusion the first Maldivian that was tested positive will be referred as case 16 and the second Maldivian tested positive would be referred as case 17.
Clarifying further, Mr. Mabrouk said 29 people have identified as contact of Case 16 and those individuals have now been ordered to stay under home quarantine.
Mr. Mabourk said 48 people have been identified as contacts of Case 17 and 5 of those individuals have been moved to isolation facilities. He said while another 3 people have quarantined at a government-sanctioned facility, 2 others have now been ordered to stay under home quarantine.
