The Maldives Parliament's Speaker Mohamed Nasheed was all praises to Mrs Amal Clooney for stepping up to represent Maldives at UN's highest court seeking justice for Rohingya Muslims.
In a tweet on Friday afternoon, parliament's Speaker expressed his delight over Mrs. Clooney's decision to work with the island nation on behalf of the Rohingya Muslims.
"I am delighted that Amal Clooney is working with Maldives to fight on behalf of the Rohingya people," Nasheed stated.
"As good Muslims, Maldivians have a duty to help our brothers and sisters, and it makes sense to begin with those who are closest to us," he added.
Earlier the Maldivian government, on Tuesday, said its decision in joining with Gambia in challenging Myanmar's inhuman treatment against the Rohingya people during an army crackdown in Rakhine state in 2017.
The crackdown forced more than 700,000 people to flee to neighboring Bangladesh.
Back in January, an unanimous decision by the international court of justice (ICJ) in The Hague imposed emergency provisional measures on Myanmar.
The Myanmar government was instructed in preventing genocidal violence against its Rohingya minority and preserve any evidence of past crimes.
While Maldives announced joining Gambia at the 43rd session of UN's human rights council, made through the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, Mrs. Clooney is expected to deliver her statement at the session.
Mrs. Clooney is credited with the successful representation of former Maldives President and current parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and secured a UN decision stating his 2015 jailing for 13 years was illegal.
