A local alleged with abusing and sexually harassing minors was arrested on Thursday by local authorities.

Reports confirm authorities arrested a 51 year old local man.

Though the identity of the suspect has not been disclosed by Maldives Police, local reports claim the elderly man holds a reputable designation at a public office in either Laamu or Thaa atoll.

Other reports claim the individual is a local councilor, and his case has been presented to the Human Rights Committee of Maldives parliament.

Authorities confirm a total of four distinct cases have been lodged against the suspect.

One of the cases have been archived into the 'cold case' category over insufficient evidence.

The remaining three cases were investigated and detailed reports of the cases have already been filed at Prosecutor General's Office.

Police further confirmed the suspect was already tried at court over one of the cases.

The elderly suspect was arrested by authorities after Police were ordered to remand him until the duration of his current trial.
