Flight movements at Velana International Airport (VIA) has increased from 01 December.

As per Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) - the operator of VIA airport - total flight movements on 01 December was recorded at 226.

VIA, the main air gateway to Maldives, observes the busiest flight movements to and from the island nation.

According to MACL, on 01 December total international flight movements were recorded at 102 and domestic movements at 121.

The last time, flight movements increased this strong was back in December 2018 when a total of 216 movements were recorded.

The notable increase in flight movement in December comes majorly due to the start of peak tourism season in Maldives.

The seasonal-tourism landscape of Maldives observes visitor count increase from November end onwards every year, stretching into February-March of the following year.

The tourist arrival to Maldives in 2019, has observed comparatively stronger growth.

In 27 November, the island nation was graced by its 1.5 millionth visitor - achieving the initial tourist arrival target to Maldives set by Ministry of Tourism.

Meanwhile, in light strong arrival numbers posted throughout the year, the prime tourism promoting act in Maldives; MMPRC has revised their arrival estimate from 1.5 million to 1.6 million.
