Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, has blamed the depleting state of Maldives Ports Limited MPL for the recent tragedy involving a landing craft that took the lives of two people.

Speaking at today's Parliament session, Nazim said the state of MPL is one of the issues the Parliament Committees are deliberating on. He said that the deliberation has shed light on how not to manage a state-owned company.

He pointed out that MPL lacks the capacity to undertake the development projects it needs.

While MP Nazim sits on several Parliamentary Committees, including the Budget Committee for 2026, he did not specify which committees were going through MPL's operations.

Earlier this month, tragic events unfolded when a landing craft overturned while trying to unload cranes from a ship just outside Male' near the MPL Port.

A local man and a foreigner died in the accident, after which MPL revealed that the captain of the capsized vessel did not have an appropriate license and certificates.
