The state has introduced the Human Organ Transplant Bill to the Parliament.

The Attorney General's Office said the bill's main purpose is to establish a strong system for organ and organ part transplantation.

Also, to make sure the organ transplant service provided in the Maldives is safe and accessible to all.

The Bill also aims to establish the rules and standards to ensure that the service is provided sustainably and to define the responsibilities of the service provider and the service recipient.

According to the bill, it is an offense to assist in organ transplantation without the consent of anyone.

The bill also provides for fines for those who assist in such activities and for health workers who commit such offences.

The bill states that the quality controller under the Health Services Act will check whether the facilities comply with the standards after issuing permission for transplants.

As such, the bill allows only live-donor organ transplants.

It also states that people in state custody and those on sentences cannot donate organs and can only donate organs after consulting health professionals.

The bill also creates a five-member "Organ Transplant Authorization Committee" which will authorize organ transplants.

The bill also makes it an offense to sell or buy an organ or part of an organ for transplantation.
