The Parliament has approved the appointment of Chief Judge of High Court Hussain Shaheed to the Supreme Court.

A slot opened on the Supreme Court after Supreme Court Judge Husnu Sood resigned after the Judicial Services Commission launched an investigation into him.

Three candidates submitted their applications when the JSC announced it would accept submissions for the top court bench.

The candidates include Shaheed, former Prosecutor General Maryiam Nihaayath, and Lawyer Rusdhuallh Ibrahim.

JSC interviewed all three candidates and recommended Shaheed for the empty slot. The Parliament's Judiciary Committee also approved Shaheed's name for the Supreme Court bench opening in an unceremoniously short committee meeting.

At today's Parliamentary session, all 64 MPs who took part in the vote, opted to vote in favor of Shaheed for the Supreme Court slot.

Justice Husnu Suood resigned after three Supreme Court judges, including himself, were suspended and investigations into ethical issues were launched.
