The Bank of Maldives BML announced today that it would be increasing the limit on debit cards issued by the bank for locals performing the Umrah pilgrimage during Ramadan.
The dollar limit has been increased to USD 1,500.
The Bank's announcement came days after the President instructed the Maldives Monetary Authority MMA to facilitate the increase to the dollar limit.
In a statement issued today, BML said the limit can only be used in Saudi Arabia and is limited to one debit card per customer.
It also said that the Bank would be sharing the details of the limit increase with Umrah groups to facilitate customers who travel with them for their pilgrimage.
The Bank urged customers traveling via Umrah groups to contact their respective groups for further details.
BML also said that pilgrims performing the Umrah pilgrimage on their own can adjust their card limit by sending a copy of their passport and ticket through BML's mobile application five days before departure (on official days).
It further said that in addition to the USD 1,500 limit on debit cards, debit cards will still have a monthly limit of USD 250, and the bank will continue to sell USD 500 to all Umrah pilgrims.
