President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed keen interest in making R. Vaadhoo the first inhabited island in the Maldives to be fully powered by renewable energy sources, particularly solar power.
He made these remarks whilst speaking to the residents of R. Vaadhoo during his current three-day tour of several islands in Raa Atoll. In his speech, the President characterized R. Vaadhoo as an island whose residents proactively demonstrate initiative and pursue constructive development.
The President commended R. Vaadhoo's residents for their positive thinking and development-oriented mindset. Continuing along these lines, he noted that there are special development plans for the island and that R. Vaadhoo has already initiated numerous renewable energy projects of its own accord. He expressed his support and encouragement for these efforts.
Reiterating the Government's target of having at least one-third of the country's electricity supply derived from renewable sources by 2028, the President expressed his desire to make R. Vaadhoo a model island powered entirely by renewable energy, especially solar power. He assured that this would be achievable if the residents supported this vision. Whilst clarifying that this was not a formal pledge, he stated that if residents wished, he would like to make R. Vaadhoo a model island in this regard within the next four years.
The President also shared other encouraging news with R. Vaadhoo's residents. He assured that permanent solutions would be found for waste management issues and help resolve current land allocation matters.
Addressing coastal erosion concerns, he promised that alongside the ongoing rock boulder project, a harbor would be built to residents' satisfaction.
The President reassured R. Vaadhoo's residents of the Government's full support for development projects requested by the council and the community. He emphasised that his greatest assurance to the people was his commitment to fulfilling his Presidential campaign promises.
The President is conducting this tour accompanied by a high-level delegation from ministries directly involved in public development and progress. The tour is scheduled to cover eleven islands in Raa Atoll, including An'golhitheemu, Hulhudhuffaaru, Innamaadhoo, Kinolhas, Maakurathu, Maduvvari, Fainu, Rasgetheemu, Rasmaadhoo, and Un'goofaaru.
