National Disaster Management Authority NDMA says more than 200 individuals have been provided with temporary shelter because of yesterday's heavy rain and subsequent flooding in Male.
NDMA said that 774 establishments and houses requested its assistance due to the flooding. It said that 554 requests came in for sandbagging.
At the same time, 53 households reported disruption of essential needs, and 226 people from 36 households were provided with temporary shelter.
The city council, police, army, local government ministry, and scouts were involved in the sandbagging campaign. The army as well as private individuals have been involved in the drainage work.
Yesterday's downpour caused major flooding in Male'. Flood waters reached the waist in some areas while in other areas the flood waters were knee-deep.
Residents found it difficult to walk in some areas while in other areas it was even difficult to use vehicles.
The National Weather Service, Maldives Meteorological Services said today that weather conditions were expected gradually improve in the next 48 hours.
