The Parliament has voted to expel the Vice President of the Elections Commission Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif from their posts.
At the Parlament session held today, 68 MP voted in favor of expelling Nashath and Asif while 10 voted against expelling them.
The Parliament was also asked to vote on the fate of Commission member Dr. Mohamed Zahir who the house allowed to retain his membership with 70 MP voting against expelling him.
The Chair of Parliament's State-owned Enterprises Committee and MP for Maafushi Constituency Hussain Riza had accused of all three members of working for their interests and that the Committee had received complaints regarding the three MPs.
It was alleged that Nashat, Zahir, and Asif, in association with a businessman had procured computers for the Commission through a separate business company and had procured some items for the Commission from a business connected with the three members and were thus making huge profits from each transaction.
According to the committee report, the three members sent the list of members who signed up to form a separate political party to a former official in the President's Office and tried to prevent the formation of the party.
In addition, the report also alleged that the three members were selling public information stored in the Election Commission's database and profiting from it.
