President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has responded to the accusations made against his administration about its plan to hijack the media with a newly proposed bill.
A bill has been introduced in Parliament to abolish the Maldives Media Council (MMC) and the Broadcasting Commission and create a new commission to regulate the media under the name of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission.
The Bill was proposed by the MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Abdul Hannan Abubakar. In his Bill, MP Hanaan who is an independent MP, states that the ruling party would hold majority power over the new media commission.
While the government, which holds majority power in the parliament, has come under fire, President Muizzu said via his X account that he did not believe in controlling newspapers and media.
President Muizzu said every citizen has the right to do whatever he/she wants with their freedom in the territory of the sovereignty of the Maldivian State as long as it does not violate the holy religion of Islam and the Constitution of the Maldives.
Earlier today main opposition party MDP voiced concerns about the new bill and accused the government of orchestrating its submission to the parliament.
