The main opposition party Maldives Democratic Party MDP has condemned government remarks stating that it would take action against an online media outlet that published a report about the President.
The report alleged that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been giving out cash to PNC Parliamentarians every month and featured video footage of Parliamentarians going in and out of the PNC office at night.
Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed said that the government is working to take legal action against the outlet that spread such a piece of false news about the President.
In a statement, MDP said that freedom of journalism, publication of news and information, and dissemination of such news is a fundamental right guaranteed to every Dhvehi citizen under Article 28 of the Constitution.
The statement also said that intimidation of those who exercise that right to bring truthful information to the people is an attempt to facilitate a dictatorial regime.
Further, the statement said that journalism is one of the most important pillars of democracy and the government believes that insulting, intimidating, and various forms of harassment of media and journalists who bring news and information about illegal activities of the government is planned and organized to silence such media and journalists.
