Police say they have launched an investigation into an alleged coup attempt to bring down the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after the announcement made by the Bank of Maldives BML to limit foreign transactions on all debit cards linked to MVR accounts.

The announcement by the Bank, in which the government has a sizeable share, shook the country to its core with the future of students studying abroad and locals who have to make reoccurring foreign transactions up in the air.

However, BML reversed its decision before sundown yesterday after the Central Bank MMA intervened on the government's behalf.

Police said today that several contributing factors, including BML's announcement against the government's recommendation, led them to launch an investigation.

Police also said that while the bank announced its decision, political parties were holding press conferences to talk about the government's financial position. They further said that hundreds of bot accounts on social media were encouraging citizens to take to the streets and disrupt public order while destroying national interests.

Police said that these actions can be viewed as attempting to bring an end to a legitimate government and that they were now investigating these incidents.
