The Education Ministry has confirmed that a student from Majeedhiya School has tested positive for Tuberculosis TB.
Speaking to the Press, an official from the Ministry said that since a student has tested positive for TB from Majeedhiya school in Male', the Ministry and the school are monitoring the situation as per the protocols set by the Health Protection Agency HPA.
However, the Ministry did not give any more information about the case and the HPA is yet to confirm the case from Majeedhiya school. Local media reported that the school will be testing other students for TB to determine whether or not there is a spread of the widely contagious illness.
According to World Health Organization WHO TB is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and it most often affects the lungs. TB is spread through the air when people with lung TB cough, sneeze, or spit. A person needs to inhale only a few germs to become infected.
Every year, 10 million people fall ill with tuberculosis (TB). Despite being a preventable and curable disease, 1.5 million people die from TB each year – making it the world’s top infectious killer.
