India and the Maldives have held discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and investment ties, according to reports by Maldives' state-run Public Service Media (PSM).

The talks were held in Malé on Friday between India’s Commerce Secretary, Sunil Barthwal, and Maldives’ Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed. The meeting, convened at the Maldivian Ministry of Economic Development, focused on exploring new avenues of economic cooperation and reinforcing existing trade partnerships.

Following the meeting, Minister Saeed stated on X (formerly Twitter): “Had a productive meeting today with India’s Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal. We discussed strengthening trade and investment partnerships between our nations and exploring new opportunities for economic cooperation.”

The Indian Department of Commerce also described the meeting as “constructive,” highlighting mutual interest in enhancing economic ties and identifying new areas for collaboration.

Recent efforts to boost Indian investment in the Maldives have included business forums in three Indian cities, showcasing emerging opportunities in the island nation. India remains a vital development partner, contributing to key infrastructure and capacity-building projects across the Maldives. Additionally, New Delhi has extended a currency swap facility of USD 25.94 million to support the Maldivian economy.

This dialogue follows an earlier engagement on May 26, when Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel led a high-level delegation to New Delhi. That visit focused on advancing trade and strategic cooperation and reviewing progress on the comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership agreed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s official trip to India in October 2024.

India-Maldives relations had experienced strain following President Muizzu’s inauguration in November 2023, when he called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel. However, both nations reached a mutual agreement to replace the military staff with civilians. Relations began to improve following Muizzu’s reaffirmation to strengthen bilateral ties during his subsequent visit to New Delhi.

The Maldives continues to play a strategic role in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its Vision MAHASAGAR – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
