National Disaster Management Authority of the Maldives NDMA says more than 40 houses in Addu City Feydhoo have been affected by the heavy rain in the Southernmost city.

NDMA said that the City Council and Maldives National Defence Force MNDF assisted more than 40 houses affected by the rain in the city last night.

It also said that residents from 5 houses had to be relocated from their homes because of the water damage. It said that temporary housing was provided to residents of two houses and the residents from the rest of the houses moved into houses of relatives.

Last night, MNDF said that it had started pumping out water from the streets of Addu City after the heavy downpour left the city mostly flooded.

Flooding and water damage has grown common in Addu City and residents have grown weary of flood damage to their homes with authorities failing to take effective preventive measures.

Recently, President Dr. Mohamed Miuzzu announced that the Construction Ministry would draw up a contract with Road Development Corporation RDC to install asphalt on 60 km of road in Addu City.

The President added that this was an MVR 18 million project and would be initiated later this year.

President Muizzu said that Addu's water system must be upgraded and that this project would be assigned to MWSC this month.
