Only three out of the 42 female candidates that competed in yesterday's Parliamentary elections only three won seats.
The winners include President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's half Sister Fathimath Sauda who claimed the parliamentary seat of Nilandhoo Constituency for the ruling PNC.
Sauda won 1,137 votes which accounts for 64.7 percent of the total votes cast in the Constituency. Her opponent, Independent candidate Ahmed Rashee won 620 votes.
The PNC candidate for Maafannu Central Constituency Asma Rasheed also won her set for the party. Asma, who had been an MP before, won the seat by claiming 866 votes out of the 1947 votes cast for the constituency.
Her closest opponent, MDP's Ahmed Amir won 420 votes.
Meanwhile, independent candidate and former Adhalath party MP Dr. Anara Naseem also won her seat in yesterday's election. Anara claimed the parliamentary seat for the Huraa Constituency with a vote margin of 83. She beat candidates from both MDP and PNC to claim her seat yet again in the parliament.
Notably, current female parliamentary members like former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah and the MP for Hinvaru Constituency Jeehan Mahmood were defeated in yesterday's elections.
