Police have urged the public to remain cautious as counterfeit USD notes are currently used in transactions.
Sharing the images of the fake dollar notes currently circulating, Police urged the public to only buy/sell dollars to license foreign exchangers.
They also asked the public to report unlicensed foreign currency exchangers to the authorities.
The fake notes look almost like the real USD notes but have the words 'Copy' written in English on both sides.
Police urged the public to remain extra vigilant when dealing in USD and not to complete transactions without proper verification.
Recently, the Central Bank Maldives Monetary Authority warned that fake USD 100 notes were in circulation and that the public must remain cautious when carrying out dollar transactions.
The circulation of counterfeit notes is not uncommon in the Maldives where many foreign currencies are exchanged daily as the country is a popular tourist destination.
