Male authorities have begun distributing Fitr Zakat to those on the poor and needy registry ahead of Eid-Al Fitr.

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that historically, Fitr Zakat has been distributed to the poor on the island. He said that if there is no poor on the island, then to those in the nearest island.

Noting that the number of individuals who paid Fitr Zakat in Male' has increased this year, Minister Shaheem said that authorities are distributing MVR 8,000 per head to those on the poor and needy registry in Male'.

Minister Shaheem said that the money would be deposited directly into their accounts and that Fitr Zakat would be distributed to the families of those imprisoned for various reasons.

He further said those in children's shelters and special needs centers would also receive Fitr Zakat.

Authorities have said before that until the 20th of Ramadan, the government has received MVR 4.49 million as Fitr Zakat.
