President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says the Maldives commend the adoption of the long-awaited resolution approved by the United Nations Security Council demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a post on 'X,' the President noted that this was long overdue.

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages as the United States abstained from the vote.

The remaining 14 council members voted in favor of the resolution proposed by the ten elected council members. There was a round of applause in the council chamber after the vote.

President Muizzu continued by demanding Israel to implement and fully comply with the resolution.

He said that the hope of a ceasefire brings timely relief to the people of Gaza as they strive to embrace the true spirit of Ramadan in the face of adversity and continuous attacks by Israeli forces.

The President said that the international community must uphold this momentum to find a permanent ceasefire and an immediate end to the perpetuation of genocidal acts.

He added that the world must do more for the Palestinian people.
