Elections Commission says so far only candidates have applied to compete in the upcoming Parliamentary Elections slated for next month.

Applications for the elections scheduled for March 17th opened on the 30th of last month and the deadline is set to expire four days from now on the 14th of February.

The Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb said today that it has been 12 days since the application opened and that only 4 days remain till the application is closed.

Habeeb said that even if the election date is pushed, candidates must submit their applications within the current period given to file their candidacies.

Noting that the Elections Commission is accepting applications on the weekends too, Habeen said so far only 18 candidates have submitted their applications for 15 constituencies.

Though the Election is tabled for next month, the main opposition party MDP is pushing to postpone the elections and yesterday the Parliament's Select Committee to review the Amendments proposed to the Elections Act voted to hold the Elections 10 days after Ramadan.

The Constitution states that the Parliamentary Elections must be held 30 days before the term of the current Parliament expires.
