President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conferred the Presidential Honour for Distinguished Service to the Nation of Maldives upon the esteemed people of Utheemu, North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, in recognition of their enduring contribution to the preservation of national heritage.
The honour acknowledges their steadfast commitment to safeguarding Utheemu Ganduvaru, a site of profound historical and cultural importance that has remained under their care for nearly five centuries.
Utheemu Ganduvaru, the ancestral residence of Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam (Utheemu Mahaaradhun), holds immense significance as a symbol of the nation’s heritage.
It was his home before ascending the throne and has long been revered as a monument of Maldivian history and culture. The people of Utheemu have shown exceptional dedication to maintaining the palace and other relics on the island, a responsibility they have shouldered for more than 450 years without any form of compensation.
Their meticulous care of Utheemu Ganduvaru reflects the deep respect they hold for the site. The palace interior is blanketed with white sand, carefully sifted with a baiyypholhi (traditional sieve) to maintain cleanliness.
The outer grounds are covered with clean coral sand, tended by the women of Utheemu, who ensure the premises remain pristine. Out of reverence, fishermen refrained from using the palace road or bringing fish into the area, mindful that even a single drop of blood might compromise its sanctity.
For centuries, despite limited or no Government support, the people of Utheemu continued their devoted efforts. In recent years, however, the Government has introduced comprehensive measures, including hiring dedicated workers and allocating resources for the maintenance and renovation of the site. These steps now ensure a more sustainable level of care and protection for Utheemu Ganduvaru, building upon the legacy safeguarded by generations of Utheemu residents.
