Maldives Food and Drug Authority has banned importing and selling a contaminated batch of Toblerone chocolates from Switzerland.
MFDA said in a statement today that the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed has warned the authority via WHO's International Food Safety Authority Network that a batch of the chocolate has been contaminated with plastic.
MFDA said that this contamination has been attributed to a mishap with the machine that produces the chocolate. It said that the European authorities have indicated that consuming the contaminated chocolate may cause pieces of plastic to be stuck in the throat and damage the teeth.
The Authority added it has now prohibited the importing and selling of the contaminated batch of milk chocolate from the global brand.
It shared that the product is named Toblerone Milk with Honey & Almond Nougat.
The decision from MFDA follows the same directives from several other regions including Hong Kong.
