The Democrats have issued a three-line whip against approving some of the ministers on the cabinet of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
In a statement issued minutes before the extraordinary parliament session with the minister's approval on the agenda, the democrats said that it was alarmed and concerned by some of the policies the current administration is implementing.
It said that after discussions within the party, it was decided that the party would withhold its approval from some of the Ministers.
The statement further said that a strong opposition that holds the government accountable is needed for good governance and holding the government and its ministers accountable should be the responsibility of the Parliament.
The Democrats added that they would be enforcing this same principle when giving or withholding approval to government ministers.
The decision by the democrats came after it announced last week that it had joined forces with MDP to begin holding the government accountable and responsible on several issues.
In a joint press, the parties said that the issues that they are looking to work together include limiting the size of the parliament stating that while the current parliament has 87 seats, the next would have 93.
They said that the parties believe there is a need to review the projected and unlimited growth in the number of MPs and parliamentary constituencies.
They also said that they are willing to commit to passing legislation on regulating the governance of State-owned Enterprises. The Parties also said that they would commit to legislation limiting the number of political appointees by the government.
The Democrats and MDP said that to this end, MPs of the two parties who together hold 55 seats in the 87-member house have requested an extraordinary sitting of the parliament to begin work on the legislation and to bring the necessary constitutional amendments.
