Chaotic scenes played out on live television as several members of the media who were attending a press conference held by the Attorney General at the President's Office walked out midway through the briefing.
Attorney General Ahmed Usham met with the press to clarify the government's legal stand on the media regulation bill at the Parliament's committee stage.
Usham was adamant that there was no reason to throw out the bill, which was submitted by an Independent Member of Parliament. He said, however, that some of the provisions in the bill should be amended.
The Attorney General urged journalists and concerned members of the public to submit their views to the parliament committee as well as to his office to facilitate these amendments.
He faced hard questions from members of the media present at the press conference on why the bill was being rushed through the parliament, as the bill was accepted by the parliament yesterday in an extraordinary meeting of the legislative body. The Parliament is currently in recess.
Several members of the media worked out of the press conference, claiming that the Attorney General was evading their questions and were heard accusing the state's top lawyer of telling lies.
