The main opposition party, Maldives Democratic Party MDP has condemned the decision by utility company Fenaka to dismiss temporary employees it hired for a project in Haa Alifu Dhihdhoo.
Fenaka decided not to renew the contracts of 57 employees it had hired for the new powerhouse project on the island as the project has been delayed.
These employees had protested against the decision on the island earlier this week.
In a statement condemning the decision, MDP expressed grave concern that state-owned companies are firing employees they had hired from different islands in the country under the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
MDP noted that the President promised during his presidential campaign that he wouldn't fire any government employee once he came to power and that within 60 days of taking over the government, he went against his pledge and axed hundreds of employees from state-owned companies.
MDP said that it believed that the government took these decisions to influence the upcoming Parliamentary Elections. It said that no individual should face the threat of losing their jobs because of the political party they support.
It called on the government to stop firing employees from state-owned companies and give jobs back to those who have already been dismissed.
