Police have urged the public to remain cautious as counterfeit USD notes are currently being used in transactions.

They said that they have noticed that counterfeit 20,50, and 100 USD notes have been in circulation and the general public must remain vigilant of such fake notes.

Police said they have received many incidents in which fake USD notes were used for transactions and that they were further investigating these cases.

They said that they had arrested a 57-year-old man for using counterfeit USD notes during a business transaction and that the suspect had been remanded in custody for an additional 15 days.

Police urged the public to remain extra vigilant when dealing in USD and not to complete transactions without proper verification.

Last month, the Central Bank Maldives Monetary Authority warned that fake USD 100 notes were in circulation and that the public must remain cautious when carrying out dollar transactions.

The circulation of counterfeit notes is not uncommon in the Maldives where many foreign currencies exchanged on a daily basis as the country is a popular tourist destination.
