The Government of Maldives says it is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals.
This comes after top-ranking officials from the government posted on social media berating the Indian Prime Minister after he was featured in a video promoting Indian Lakashdeep islands as a local tourist destination for Indians.
It has been reported that the Indian government is trying to attract locals who have been flocking to the sandy white beaches of the Maldives which promoted government social media activists to post what some say are derogatory comments against the Indian Prime Minister.
In a statement, the government of Maldives said that these opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives.
It further said that it believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised democratically and responsibly, and in ways that do not spread hatred, and negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.
The Maldivian government assured that the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.
