Police say they have sent the body of the newborn baby who was found in a bag thrown in the dump yard in Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah for a postmortem.

An official from the police confirmed this to the outlet and said that the baby's body was sent to India yesterday.

The newborn was found on the 3rd of this month and authorities confirmed that the baby was dead when it was found.

One of the sources from the island said that the baby had its umbilical cord attached to its body when it was found and from the look and color of the baby it looked like the baby was dumped sometime the previous night.

Local police determined that the mother of the baby was a foreigner who worked at a guest house on the island. Police apprehended the woman at Velanaa International Airport as she attempted to flee the country.

The Criminal Court has ordered that the suspect remain in custody till her trial is over.

The foreigner is a 30-year-old from Sri Lanka.
