Central Bank, Maldives Monetary Authority MMA has warned the public to be cautious as fake USD 100 notes are currently in circulation in the Maldives.

MMA said that the fake notes are believed to have been printed between 1996 and 2016. It said that these notes have white borders.

The Central Bank also said that the fake notes appear to have been printed on a different paper and that when the notes are put under a light, the watermark on the right side of the note is different from actual dollar notes.

MMA also said that once under the light, the fake notes do not have the thread line on both sides of the actual notes and that under a UV light, these thread lines do not glow.

It also said when the fake notes are put under the UV light, the security fiber on actual notes is not visible as well.

MMA warned the public to be weary if they receive USD 100 notes with white borders and to bring the suspicious notes to the bank for verification.

The circulation of counterfeit notes are not uncommon in the Maldives where many foreign currencies exchanged on a daily basis as the country is a popular tourist destination.
