Police have confirmed that the body of a newborn baby has been found in the dump yard of Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah.

They said the report of the incident came around 09:20 a.m. today and that the baby was found in a bag thrown at the dumping yard.

Police said that one of its team was now at the scene on the island and a doctor who checked the newborn confirmed that the baby was dead.

Speaking to 'The Press', President of the Island Council Ibrahim Usman said that it was difficult to talk more about the incident as the Police were conducting their investigations.

Usman said that no arrests had been made concerning the incident and that currently there were no persons of interest in the case.

Police said that they would keep updating the media as they get more information about the incident.

Newborn baby 'dumping' has grown uncommon in the Maldives in recent years but now and then a case surfaces in the country, mostly in the inner islands.
