Police have started using dogs to check vehicles in the traffic flow.

Police said they have joined forces with airport police, canine squad, and bridge patrol beats to conduct routine spot checks at Velana International Airport.

The aim is to use the experience of special teams to strengthen and increase operations and maintain a safe environment.

The 10 dogs were brought to Maldives in July last year and were first used in a counter-terrorism operation conducted in Addu City in November last year. The dogs are specially trained in the US to detect dangerous explosives and 10 police officers have been trained in the US to use them in operations and handle the dogs.

Police said the dog squad is also being used in various operations conducted in connection with terrorism operations such as customs, MPL, airport, airport cargo area, and high-profile events in Maldives and abroad.

With the addition of 10 dogs, the police dog squad now uses 25 dogs and has conducted various successful operations using the dog squad.

The dogs are being used in traffic as President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu takes the oath of office tomorrow at a time when many foreign dignitaries are attending the ceremony.
