Parliament Majority Party Maldives Democratic Party says it wants to make sure that the Parliamentary session in which the new President and his Vice President will take their oaths of office has now questions of legality hanging over it.
The new President and Vice President are scheduled to take their oaths of office at a parliament session to be held on the 17th of next month and MDP is trying to remove the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed before the government changes.
Earlier this month, MDP submitted a no-confidence resolution against the Speaker, and the Parliament is expected to debate on the resolution at its next session scheduled for this Sunday.
Yesterday, the MDP Parliamentary Group said in comments to the media that they would not allow any other parliamentary work including the swearing-in ceremony for the new President to take place before the no-confidence vote against the Speaker is taken care of.
Opposition parties voiced their concern over these statements saying that MDP would not be allowed to hijack the swearing-in ceremony for the new President.
Today, MDP said in a statement that the party would not give anyone the chance to make the Constitution impotent and disrupting the Parliament as a new government prepares to come into power.
MDP went on to say that it would ensure that the Parliamentary session in which the President and Vice President would take their oaths of office has now legal questions hanging over it.
The Party further assured that it would do whatever it takes to make sure that the new government is sworn in legitmately.
