Police say they have sent the bodies of the victims of the gas cylinder explosion in Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo back to their native country of India.

Last Saturday a gas cylinder exploded on the land reclamation work site for the Makunudhoo Airport project, killing two Indian nationals working on the site.

The powerful explosion rocked the island of Makunudhoo and threw the body parts of the victims several meters away from the site of the explosion.

The explosion killed 27-year-old Mohamed Raaja Ansaaree and 25-year-old Sudheera Sethi. Police said that they had sent the remains of the victims to India yesterday to hand over the remains to their families after the tragic accident.

The land reclamation project remain suspended in Makunudhoo following the explosion.

Maldives National Defense Force MNDF and Police collected forensic evidence from the scene of the blast. However, the authorities failed to give any details of their findings.
