The Parliamentary session scheduled for today has been canceled due to the lack of a quorum as the State prepared to submit its Supplementary Budget to the legislative house today.

The Parliamentary agenda for today indicated that the Supplementary budget would be submitted to the parliament today but the session did not even start due to the lack of an adequate number of MPs present at the session.

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament MP Eva Abdullah who chaired today's session said that the session for the day has to be canceled due to the lack of a quorum.

But she did not give the details of how many MPs were present for today's session.

Parliament's standing order requires at least one-fourth of the parliament to be present for its session. For the 19th Parliament with 87 members, 22 MPs must be present for a session to continue.

The lack of a quorum has become a cumbersome trend at the parliament since it began its 3rd term for the year with several sessions cancelled due to the lack of quorum and important legislative work mounting.

The Finance Ministry announced the MVR 6 billion Supplementary Budget last Wednesday as the government looks to shore up its finances. The Supplementary budget would take the total state budget for the year 2023 to a whopping MVR 49.4 billion.
