Maldives Customs Services says it has seized a large haul of narcotics before it was smuggled into the country.

Customs said that it seized 4.720 kg of narcotics from the luggage of a Pakistani passenger who arrived in the country on the 7th of this month.

They said that the 20-year-old woman's luggage was searched after suspicions arose about the potential drug smuggling.

They said that during the search, Customs officers found a suspicious package that they alleged contained narcotics. Customers further said that initial testing revealed the narcotics to be heroin.

The 4.720 kg of heroin would have a street value of MVR 5.8 million.

Maldives Customs Services said that they have now handed over the Pakistani woman who was arrested with the narcotics.
