The Elections Commission says it is looking to hold the by-election to elect a Mayor for Male' City before the 17th of January.
The Mayorship of Male' would be vacant on the 17th of next month, when the current Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who won the Presidential Election held last month, would take his oath of office.
He is expected to resign a day before or on the day he takes his oath of office and the Local Government Authority LGA would notify the Elections Commission when Muizzu resigns from his post.
The Commission said that once it has been notified of the vacancy, it would open the application to compete for the Mayorship of Male' City within 5 days.
Many have expressed interest in competing in the Male' City Mayor election including current Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof while the Democrats have decided to field its member Male' City Councillor Mohamed Saif Fathih for the post.
Former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed has also announced that he would be competing for the Male' City Mayorship.
