Incumbent Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has decided to contest for the post of Male city mayor as the current sitting Mayor won the presidential election and the post would be vaacant on 17th of November.

The sitting mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the presidential election held on 30, September 23 competing the incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The president elect defeated Solih with 19000 votes, or an 8% margin and is the 1st candidate who won solely. The only party he had in coalition was MNP, who contested in round 1 and was able to secure only lessthan 2000 votes.

The president elect will be sworn in as president on 17th of November 23.

In a post on social media platform X, Mahloof said he has decided to contest the by-election for the post of Mayor on November 17,

"So I would like to ask all the people of Maldives to support me". Mahloof said.

Mahloof is the Youth Minister of the current regime.

Prosecutors previously charged Mahloof of taking $33,000 in bribes from former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb. However, the prosecution later withdrew the charges in April saying it could not be proved that the money was received as a bribe.
